Last Tuesday I hitched my way to Robinson’s early in the morning to watch THE PASSION. I have been really excited to watch it ever since I first read in the net that MEL GIBSON was doing a CHRIST movie.

I have seen tons of biblical movies. They’re my personal favorite. Anything that has sword sandals and togas. Most of them are historical or biblical stories and then theirs the occasional RAY HARRYHAUSEN VARIANT that would have GIANT BRONZE MEN and monsters! COOL!

Some of my friends already warned me to bring a Kleenex or two. I told them that are what the long sleeve is for.

The screening ended at around 1:30. It ‘s not a film that I recommended that you start the day with.

But I love the movie.

It’s a SPLATTER PUNK JESUS CHRIST flick!

But what would you expect when the director of the film is MAD MAX.

And the best part is that its earning hundreds and millions in the box office. Leaving the film executives scratching their heads because they refuse to distribute the film or produce it and declared that it won’t make a penny.

The problems in Hollywood now are that the film executives are running the studios. They based the marketability and the decision of producing a movie on …what else, MARKET RESEARCH.

Your idea must have a pre-cursor or hit film that grossed millions to ensure the go-signal.

So when you pitch you do something like this.

FLIM: “ OK this is an action adventure movie that has a strong supernatural flavor.”

FILM EXECUTIVE: “ Uhm…I don’t get it.”

FLIM: “ its RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK MEETS THE EXORCIST.”

FILM EXE: “ Hey that’s good. Raiders is one of the top grossing films of PARAMOUNT and has big revenue in the DVD market and the EXORCISTS. That baby went thru the roof even after the seventh re-issue!”

So its no wonder that when you watch Hollywood films they have a factory look and they have factory directions and a factory ending.

There was a time when film studios were run by filmmakers. Producers like DAVID O SLEZNICK were very gifted and talented individuals who knew inherently if a film is good not because of the money it would generate but by the substance and the story. He was the one who was personally responsible for bringing in ALFRED HITCHCOCK from ENGLAND

SLEZNICK created pictures that were classic gems like REBECCA, GONE WITH THE WIND and DUEL IN THE SUN.

The invasion of lawyers of marketing people into the higher echelons of Hollywood started around the late 70s. That coupled by the seeping in of television executives and mid management level people started the creative stranglehold of Hollywood produced movies.

So imagine how difficult it is to pitch a film when the bottom line is that it should gross 100 million in the domestic release alone.

For every trashy A-1 movie concept that was released, there were twenty great and original films that were trashed and thrown in the waste bin.

When Lucas pitched STAR WARS NED TANEN of UNIVERSAL pictures rejected it because there was no precedent and claimed it wont make any money.

I wonder how he is holding up right now. It’s amazing how things work. You pitch an idea and the studios would predict that it wouldn’t make any money and show you to the door. So you opt and produce it on your own. Then it becomes a box office hit because it’s unique and not the dime a dozen products out there. So you know what happens next? The studios that refused and damned your idea would now rush and climb over each other to duplicate and copy your film.

That’s what happened to STAR WARS. Universal initially passed it off and when it made money they created BATTLESTAR GALACTICA even going as low as getting JOHN DRYSTRA, STAR WARS special effects supervisor to make their product more STAR WARISH.

PATHETIC.

And that’s what’s going to happen to THE PASSION. In a few months there will be several biblical films on the production slate.

PETER’S PASSION

THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO LUKE

THE ADVENTURES OF MARY MAGDALENE IN THE CITY OF SODOM

PILATE’S HYGENE

And the unauthorized sequel to THE PASSION, which of course would be entitled THE RESURRECTION.

This is on top of the MUST HAVE LIST. Unfortunately it contains the special editions instead of the original cuts. I hate the special editions. The spfx enhancements shouldn’t have been retouched it reflects the cutting edge technology that they had way back in 77. I don’t see RAY HARRYHAUSEN going back and redoing his incredible films. The most he did was to re-time and color correct the restoration. Unlike the full renovation that LUCAS did.

But if you have access to that kind of technology, wouldn’t you go back to re do and tinker with your previous work?

Fix the glitches and some of the minor stuff but do not alter the story structure LIKE GREEDO FIRING FIRST!!!!

HAN SOLO FRIED GREEDO as soon AS THAT GREEN SLIME FINISHED HIS TREATH! Without flinching an eyebrow. That shows how cunning and ruthless the corellian pirate is. But now he’s an American cowboy. YOU HAVE TO GET SHOT FIRST BEFORE YOU FIRE BACK, SELF DEFENCE AND ALL THAT CRAP!

I’LL HOLD ON TO MY LASER DISC COLLECTION. They’re going to be priceless someday. Because it contains the original cut of all three films.

Lucas should have just included them in the four discs set collection as a streaming branching option.

Ahh well we cant have everything now can we?

Personally I’m thinking of remastering my earlier work BATTLE OF CONCEPCION AGUILA. Beef it up with some CG jets dive bombing and some pyrotechnic effects.
Originally I just shot model planes that I threw across the camera and some wire work.
My missiles were made out of pentel pens and plastic what have you’s

The trouble with viewing your works in the past is that it was done by a different person.
And now is being viewed by somebody else. You cringe on some shots and wonder why did you ever let it get into the release stage.

But then those works are very important. It reflects your growth as a person, as a filmmaker or a painter. These works are time capsules of an era long gone. The most you can do is preserve the original and do your alterations and brand it as a special edition. OR a re-imagining if you will. I won’t have the gall to call it a special edition if I do tinker with it. I’ll call it VERSION 2 or something.

Last Monday I wandered into landmark and saw the rare BATMAN retro action figure!Yikes! I QUICKLY grabbed it and inquired if there was anymore. The saleslady said that it was a leftover from last month’s delivery. So I walked out and proudly carried my latest catch. I then went to CIBO and bought a TIRAMISU cake and sat down to admire and priss on my latest acquisition.

The sculpting was incredible and the detail work, …wow! I stopped collecting toys almost a year ago. I just didn’t find anything worth collecting. I have two criteria’s for
Getting a figure.

1.The character must be someone or something that I grew up on. Well not just a character but also any item from my pop cultural passes. Such as the BATMOBILE from the 60’s ADAM WEST /BURT WARD series. Or the SEAVIEW and the MINI SUB from THE VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA.

2.The toy must be hard to find. Otherwise why would make your collection special when you can hike up to the nearest mall and just buy it off the counter. (Most collectors would disagree with me on this, but this is my criterion! Having a hard to find toy does not only boost your collection and your pride but it also makes it terribly easy to sell it in a higher price.

But the real reason I think is, if the toy or item is hard to find it makes the search and quest more interesting. Panting and pining over an object is a much more interesting endeavor than actually acquiring the thing.

I knew that then and I know it now. Sitting in the coffee shop in just a space of over twenty minutes the elation and excitement I initially felt began to subside. Now the Holy Grail shrank before my eyes and became what it really was…a toy for 6 year olds.

Well I told myself, I still have a very rare toy. Until I walked into another toyshop and discovered 3 more BATMAN retros.

FLIM: “ I thought these were rare!

STOREKEEPER: “ They are. We just got lucky.”

FLIM: “ Ok, I’ll buy them all.”

As I went home. The feeling of hunting down the sole surviving BATMAN RETRO didn’t feel so special when you’re lugging in 3 more. Hell There’s always EBAY.

SOUND THINKING

Yesterday I started designing the sound track for the pilot episode. It was exciting because of the new equipment that we have. We can do surround mixes and left to right, right to left transition phases.

I had so much fun that I forgot to eat lunch. Then it was pointed out to me why I was spending too much time with the sound mixes when the local televisions have monaural
Speakers on them at best.

Who the fuck cares! Just as long as your work looks good and sounds good.

The workload is lessening now. I figure I have at least 3 days off before shooting the succeeding episodes so now I can blog again.

Summer is about to begin and we have just completed the last week before the finals.
I handled three senior years students and one section of 3rd year. So the tight schedule, flexes down some more.

Now I can actually stop and pause and look at the sky and smell the roses so to speak.Appreciate the moment and listen to the obnoxious sounds of jeepney drivers trying to kill each other, ahh this is the life!

A NEW HOLY GRAIL

I thought that my toy fixation has ceased and desist after last years marvel legends. Then the BATMAN figure came out from MATTEL. The one with the year one look. OHH WOW! I have been trying to find this number for months now. Then I discovered that the elusive toy was last seen in Harrison plaza. The tragedy of it all is the fact that I was in Robinson’s ermita when I discovered that fact. And by the time I knew, the other collectors have descended like vultures on the two remaining toys.

Now that I have a few days of relaxn Im seriously thinking whether to go out on a crusade to acquire this much valued item.

Looking at the line up that Mattel released there are dozens of batman in the store. There’s a mink coat covered BATMAN then there’s the IGLOO WHITE colored BATMAN. Then there’s the purple and green BATMAN. I mean think of any color in the rainbow and they have a BATMAN of it. BUT THAT’S NOT WHAT BATMAN IS ABOUT! BATMAN IS BLACK COWL AND CAPE AND GREY OVER ALLS AND A BIG BAT SIGN ON HIS CHEST! WHY ON EARTH DID MATTEL issue only one TOY per box! WHAT THE FUCK where they thinking of?

When you check out the stores they have these PUSEDO PIMP BATMANS but no sign of the BATMAN original costume. BECAUSE EVERYONE WANTS THAT! They should have manufactured dozens of the original costume and made the igloo white colored BATMAN as the hard to find variant! Probably I would be pinning after that as well!

CHANSON DE GESTE

Aida, our yaya a very quiet woman with a very dry sense of humor announced a month ago after her return from her yearly sabbatical that she was seeing someone.

Of course Cess greeted the news with some trepidation.

CESS: “ What are we going to do now? If she gets married then we’ll have to find another yaya for SELINA. Do you know how hard it is to find another good yaya? “

FLIM: “ well she’s already 33. You know how women are when it comes to that biological time bomb clock of yours? You need to get laid and bear more brats. It’s nature’s programming on you working double time.”

CESS: “ Can you investigate? “

FLIM: “ You mean as in PRY? “

CESS: “ You’re good at that. Asking questions that are highly personal and offensive with that nonchalant easy going way tone…”

FLIM: “ The only reason I do those things is so that I can mine them for scripts.”

CESS: “ Well start mining for our kid!”

FLIM: “ ok…I will. But I have to be less direct… she might get offended! “

So I go downstairs and look at AIDA who had this Mona Lisa smile. Which is quite frightening because most of the time she has this cold one thousand yard stare. And now…
One wonders what’s going on inside her head.

FLIM: “ AIDA? Are you dating someone? “

AIDA: “ Yes sir! “

FLIM:” So what does he do? “

AIDA: “ He’s a soldier.”

FLIM: “ A soldier? “

So I rush upstairs to give cess her information.

CESS: “ A SOLDIER? OH MY GOSH! “

FLIM: “ Well I hate to speak in stereotypes but you know what they say about soldiers. They have more than one wife. They have at least 2 to three. Wouldn’t blame them if you’re life is always on the line; you need more than your fair share of excitement on and off the field!

CESS: “ That is so sexist! “

FLIM: “ Well I didn’t mean it to be a sexist thing. I bet even the woman soldiers would have more than one lover… Look I don’t want to argue about this whole feminist crap. All I’m telling you is that your yaya is in love with a soldier.”

CESS: “ I hope she knows what she’s doing.”

Over lunch Cess pried some more.

CESS: “ Aida I heard that you’re dating a soldier. Just be careful. You know how soldiers are? They have lots of wife. Who knows you might be number 4.”

Aida just laughed and went on her chore of cooking. That laughter sent chills up and down my spine. I don’t think I like the new AIDA. She reminds me of some eastern European witch.

Three days later we discover that Aida discovered that her soldier boy friend had another wife. It transpired because of a phone call Aida did. She called her soldier boyfriend.
AIDA: “ Hello May I speak to Petro?”

VOICE ON THE OTHER LINE: “ Who is this? “

AIDA: “ Aida.”

VOICE ON THE OTHER LINE: “ Are you his girlfriend? Well I’m his wife so don’t call ever again! “

Aida hanged up the phone. Now she’s back with that thousand-yard stare.Just when I got use to her showing human emotion....

EDITING PHYSIQUE

I’m now on the sixth day of my LEOINEDES DIET. My ideal weight used to be 140 since I’m 5’8. But for the past year I indulged myself in the DIONISIAN style of living. Which is eat as much as you like and be damned about the weight. So I ballooned. But I told myself that I could always burn everything in the gym. Initially it worked. So the flab became muscle and I could run like 20 minutes on the treadmill.

All of that changed when I started editing the projects that I was involved in. When I was working for TV. I used to pity the editors. You can tell if someone’s an editor by the way they look. THEY’RE ALL FAT!

And you can’t blame them that’s the nature of the job. They sit 24 hours a day inside an air-conditioned room as they trim and enhance shots and footages! The rooms are lit very low and when you’re deprived of sleep all you can do to regain the energy and your conscuiness is to eat high calorie food and lots of coffee.

The most exercise an editor indulges in is when they swivel their chair left to right, to slip in a videocassette or to touch up something on the audio. Occasionally they would stretch their legs and then look at you with eyes bleary and devoid of thought.

“ WHATS THE NEXT SHOT, DIREK? “

I had an editor once. We used to work out in the same gym and when I hired him he was lean and taunt. I told him that I’d give him four months before his body dissolves into a sea of fat.

EDITOR: “ That would never happen. I will stick to this regimen. Even if I don’t sleep.”

FLIM: “ Brave words from a newbie. Id give you four months. Three if you get a girl friend.”

I was wrong. He ballooned in seven months. But the weight he put on made up for all the difference.

FLIM” FUCK! YOU ARE BIG! WHAT HAPPENED? ”

EDITOR: “ I got a girlfriend.”

FLIM: “ Yes, blame it on the poor girl.”

EDITOR: “ And I had so many projects, left and right.”

FLIM: “ Yeah that happens! “

Editing is the most thankless job in the world. When I was editing my films I had a gym installed so that in between sessions I could work out. But now in the new studio there’s no room to put the equipment in.

And now that I’m editing three projects at the same time with infinitely long running times I spend more time in the editing suite that I would really like.

The gym sessions that I used to follow regularly has now abated because of the workload. The traffic eats up an hour going there so multiply that in a week you realize that 14 hours of your life would be lost just staring at the windshield while an idiot cop flags down and fleeces an erring motorist!

So nix the gym and just concentrate on the cuts. And in no time, you can see your stomach pushing the waists of your pants. And you can ‘t tell when your stomach became a gut!

Now being overweight is ok if you just intend to stay put and face the three flickering monitors all your life. But when you do the camerawork yourself …well now you’re in deep trouble!

AGILITY and stability are the main ingredients in making great shots! Those two are
Seriously jeopardized when you become overweight! You sweat more and you pant more and panting is bad when your hand holding a cam. You can see it on the viewfinder!

But it wasn’t that that force me to undertake the LEONIEDES diet. It was when I look at the mirror and stare at my stomach. Resolving to go on a diet is very easy. It’s taking the first step of not eating too much that is difficult. Especially when you’re a fantastic cook!

When you taste that slice of heaven, your mind goes…” Ohm wow! Id just take another bite and I can go on a diet tomorrow and then tomorrow…ETC.

Until you look back and it’s been months since you promised to stop over eating. But once you start and the longer you maintain it the easier it becomes.

I have the weighing scale clutched to my chest. I check like four times a day. And every time I eat I always get a small plate. VERY VERY SMALL. So you can overfill it but your stomach wont.

Next when I’m faced with a formidably delicious fare I always do a mental exercise.
I visualize the days that I have deprived myself. The long climb that I did towards MOUNT HELACON. IF I BETRAY MYSELF WITH ONE MORE MOUTHFUL
THEN ALL THE WILL POWER THAT I HAVE MUSTERED IN THE PAST DAYS
would be for naught!

That’s just one of the mental exercises that I use for the LEOINEDES DIET. But I sued it before and it worked. Of course Cess tells me that any day now I would succumb to the dark side and would pig out! DAMN I LOVE THAT WOMAN!
Last week, the Computer that was connected to the internet wont boot up. Because of the endless brownouts & the over written hard drive took its toll on CARBONEK. I dont usually name my pcs but I aquired this knack from my students who have more than one computer and they tell me that it saves them the time to indicate which is which. Plus it gives the pcs a more humane touch. they dont like referring to their pcs as just pcs. They have biblical names like JOSHUA, JERICHO and I forgot the third one.

So I elected to name my pcs as well. Now CARBONEK is the work horse. He is connected to the net like almost 24 hours a day! And this was his first breakdown , which is more than i can say for the much cared for and infinetly flacky,( i DONT EVEN WANT TO MENTION HIS NAME, PC)

So much for my weekend vacation.

After two weeks of shooting , I took a much needed break and just went to the new powerbooks branch. It was such a relief to just sit down and scan and strech my legs in the cool comfort of their couch.

I love their casual and relaxing atmospehere, specially after hiking and getting stuck in fiolages and getting bitten by insects that have been hardly catalogued by SIR RICHARD ATTENBOURGH.

I took a look see at their varied stocks and bought four books.

Reading is now a luxury that I dont even have. In between cutting and archiving I get to read a page or two and thats not what life is all about. One should be able to sit out in the open air with the sun above and a cool lemon drink beside you.

I used to read inside dark rooms with a single source of illumination.Gives a certain kind of mood for certain books but not all.besides i spend a lot of time in darkened rooms already so I need the change.

Selina has been choosen to lead the morning prayers for her class next week. She was chosen by her teachers because she screams in english fluently. Cess is in an uproar . Her worst nightmare has finally come to past. Selina with a mike in fromt of many parents and children leading them to the promise land.

CESS: " You know what she might do? "

FLIM: " Sing ABC? "

CESS: " She could launch into UNCLE FUCKER!OR KYLES MOM IS A BIG BAD BITCH. We dont knwo what she will do? "

FLIM: " Damn you're right.I better bring the videocam! This could be priceless! "

CESS: " Im serious! "

FLIM: " SO AM I! Whatever she' ll do, its going to be great! IN fact Im already shivering with anticipation. Will she be the angel and repeat the prayers you taught her or will she be the little rascal and shock the bejezzus out of every prude there! "

CESS: " Im really tense about this! "

Selina is playing in the background. She's wearing her dark jedi outfit. She then looks at us and smiles devilishly.

I cant wait....

Last Saturday I shot with an all female production crew. It was a real blast! They were so efficient that we finished after four hours of filming. When the main actor didn’t show up, before I can ask why they already had a replacement standing on the wings. And a better actor yet.

Now after trying this, I don’t think I would ever want to go back to an all male crew. Plus they smell better and have a nicer disposition

Three more shooting days and the project would be finished. I can’t wait to see how the costume would look like.

My Optical dogs are standing by for the footages that would be assembled for the spfx. I have already built up immunity on their constant wailings and moaning about a day off.

Not on this parade mister!

And what do they have to complain about? They’re inside an air-conditioned facility with the coolers pointed at them full blast. They’re just sitting there, cataloging and assembling the footages.

Im the one who has to travel into the deep forests and wade waist deep in mire and carabao mud, sweating like a pig while waving off the seventh air borne attack of the mosquito squadron.

I said before and I’m going to say it again, shooting on location is a bitch! Specially when its four hours from the nearest civilized mall.

Of course im just bitching when I just arrived. But twenty minutes later with the equipment unpacked and cam is rolling, pure bliss!

FLIM: “ I love to hear the sound of camera’s cranking, and the crowing of rooster in the early morning light. It sounds like…. uhm victory! “

SUNDAY

Did a nighttime shot in our underground river cavern. My actor and actress were wet during the four-hour shot. But the set looked great and real.

DAV: “ Is the water clean? I have a sensitive skin.”

FLIM: “ Of course it’s not cleaned you idiot! We need to make it look mucky and wet.”

JANITOR: “ Actually its clean. I just filled it up with water seven hours ago>”

FLIM: “ shut up! I want him to think it’s dirty so he’d get this disgusted look as he wades into it! “

DAV: “ My wigs completely comming apart. “

FLIM: “ Well just put a gaffers tape on your forehead and paste it on!”

DAV: “ How clean is the water really? “

FLIM: “ It so clean, that’s where they put the hito (MUDFISH) in for days to purify them before frying!

DAV: ” You mean there could be fish crap on the water? “

FLIM: “ Hold that expression! CAMERA ROLL! “

In between bouts of shooting and editing, my sister in law lent me a copy of her ALIAS SEASON 1 DVD SET. I wasn’t very familiar with it except for the fact that I knew that the lead actress played Electra in that terrible Daredevil movie. Anyway I snuked it into my back pack and figured that I could have it playing in the background while I write or edit.

The first scene in the first episode didn’t really knock me over. Ok she’s wearing a wig akin to RUN LOLA RUN. So what.

So I still find it shocking to discover that I was suddenly into episode 4 and my attention totally diverted from the task at hand. (Since I produce my own projects …I figured that the producer in me should give the director and editor in me a few hours to just relax in case of suffering a burnout!)

Suffice to say that when I was into the last episode of season one I was really hooked!
I wasn’t really shock to find that her mother was the main nasty. All the clues were there.
But it still didn’t detract from the enjoyment I experienced while watching it unfold!

This is a infinitely better than 24 HOURS! I didn’t have to skip any scenes that involved KIM BAUER! In fact I was more interested in the family drama involving Sydney’s dad and mother than her missions that were becoming formulaic!

In fact the series bible could be written down like this.

1. Previous episode recap!
2. Sloan and the latest mission objective!
3. Bumbling tech guy with his one act play before or during the introduction of the latest hardware to be used in the aforementioned mission!
4. Sloan telling Sydney to go to his office and give her paternal advise. (Of course he is the real father of Sydney or he was mistakenly led to believe by Sydney’s mother!)
5. Mission locale is always a high tech disco, rave party or any place where Sydney can walk in wearing her latest designer let me peek and get a hard on for geek costume!
6. Going into the lion’s den with a key card or whatever gizmo that can override the existing safety programs
7. Instant discovery by the guard and a hand-to-hand combat with her winning or getting support from general black side kick Dixon!

So many more elements but I don’t have the time to wade thru them. I really get turned off when they do the high tech stuff but I love any episode featuring THE RAMBALDI ARTIFACTS!

The RAMBALDI subplot struck me as being GRANT MORRISONSQUE which delighted me to no end. Adn i'm really looking forward to what is the end design of it all.

By the time I finished season 1, I became a fan of the series! I was eagerly expecting to get season 2 from my sister in law but alas. There is already a long line of people waiting to borrow it. Luckily a colleague gave me a set for my birthday! Now I m still watching! Ah well just one more disc to go and its back to the salt mines for yours truly!

This is the logo of the new project im currently in pre-production now. I just cant believe it! I just took a few hours off from finishing the final cut of the Jungle movie and suddenly a new idea pops up.. Test shots came in and they prove very promising. I already did a few minutes of a teaser trailer. More on this as it develops.

Im doing some optical line-ups and it?s not a very exciting thing to do. But I want to do it myself to insure that the proper elements come together. The television was on and I spotted some new commercials. After being exposed for a couple of minutes I shut it off After seeing two ads that sold white pigmentation formulas I realized how blatantly the advertising companies dwell on and provoke our insecurities. That no man would desire a girl with black under arms or that a girl with white complexion is infinitely more superior than the one with dark skin.

The actors were yapping about how they get turned off by this and that in a girl, mostly artificial things. They didn?t even stop to look at the mirror and check what do they have to mouth off such insensitive remarks! Yes its just a commercial, But no, its not just a commercial, its something more.

Later in class, we talked about it and I told the girls how would they feel if the guy they really liked suddenly leaned on the table and said, ? I get turned off by black underarms in a girl! ?

FLIM: ? Do you get it? So never mind if you?re a brilliant and intelligent woman who reads a lot of books and has special skills as a chef. Never mind if you have a very decent personality, and a very helpful nature. Never mind if you just climbed Mount Everest with one hand tied behind your back and juggling a pair of pompoms on your left toe, YOU?RE NOTHING BECAUSE YOU HAVE BLACK UNDERARMS!!!!!! ?

All the girls cheered. Then this tall and dusky girl talked.

GIRL: ? Sir, I may be dark but I feel pretty! ?

FLIM: " Of course you are! AND NO CHEAP COMMERCIAL CAN TELL YOU OTHERWISE! DON?T BELIEVE THAT CRAP ABOUT WHITE COMPLEXIONED GIRLS BEING HOT! GIVE IT FIVE TO SEVEN YEARS AND YOU CAN SEE THEIR SKIN WART OVER OR DISPLAY ALL THE STRETCH MARKS IN CHRISTENDOM!?

A man who will dump you because you have black underarms and have a black complexion is not even worth thinking about! What would happen to you if you do get this guy and you get married and are settled comfortably, and then one day you look at the mirror and see that your under arm suddenly became black?

Would you leave him alone with the new pretty maid with the white underarm?

And how do you get black underarms anyway? ?

GIRL: ? If you put deodorants on them.?

FLIM: " DEODORANTS? AS IN THOSE THINGS THAT ARE BEING SOLD USING THIS GUY WHO SMELLS OR SEES THE GIRLS UNDERARMS AND THEN MAKES A FACE? SO YOU GET BLACK UNDER ARMS BECAUSE OF AN EARLIER INSECURITY THE ADVERTISERS FOSTERED ON YOU!?

The girls nod in agreement.

FLIM: " THOSE COMMERCIALS WOULD TELL YOU THAT YOURE NOT PRETTY ENOUGH! YOURE NOT TALL ENOUGH. YOURE NOT THIN ENOUGH AND ALL THAT SHIT!UNTIL YOU BUY THEIR PRODUCT. AND THEN AFTER USING IT THE BOY YOU LIKE IS GOING TO MOZZY UP TO YOU AND GIVE YOU THAT MILLION PESO SMILE!THAT'S THE BIGGEST BULLSHIT BEING DUMPES TO US NEXT TO THE IDIOT WHO CONVINCED US TO BASE OUR MONETARY LEVEL ON FOREIGN CURRENCIES INSTEAD OF OUR GOLD DEPOSITS! WELL DONT YOU BUY IT AND DON?T BUY THEIR PRODUCTS!

We are flawed and insecure human beings with dozens of neurosis AS IS! And we dont need this cut troath companies adding to our misery!"

GIRL: ? Sir, I wish you?re running for office. We?d vote you! ?

There was a huge cheer. They do have their moments. Not many but they do have them!

When I shot my 1st jungle footages about a week and a half ago, much to my horror I discovered that the steadicam was missing a bronze screw in the bottom plate. It controls the stabilization pole. I searched far and wide but… it was like looking for a needle in a savannah.

Wrote the company about my missing screw and in three days they replied and said that they were going to send me 3 spare ones. I thanked them and pretty much went shooting.
I was in the command center when a package arrived. I was totally shocked to discover that it was my spare screws. AMAZING! That’s American efficiency for you. I have been so accustomed to Filipino service that I expected nothing else.

Imagine after a week and a half the screws were in my grasp. I could think of a dozen local companies who can’t even replace a part after a month. LOCAL COMPANIES, within spitting distance!

AMERICANS should conquer the world! With their service they deserve it. FORGET FUCKING NATIONALISM! What do we get? New ways of corrupting and being robbed blind by those duly elected thieves.

Case in point the AUTOMATED ballot counting machines! How can a sum that big get stolen? Easy, everyone down the pipeline got a cut! What other explanation can there be.

Why would I even waste my time to fall in line and sweat tons of buckets so I can elect into office a new crook who’ll rob us blind? There is no choice. It’s not a matter of electing this idiot or that idiot. THEY ARE ALL IDIOTS! SOME ARE BIGGER THAN THE OTHERS while others are more crooked than the next but still they are from the same tribe.

Ever since MARCOS fucked up the system, his evil specter never really left the Building. Anyone who comes in clean never gets out clean.

AMERICA should just make us a colony. WHAT? BE A 2ND CLASS CITIZEN IN YOUR OWN COUNTRY? SO FUCKING WHAT? YOU’D RATHER BE SCREWED BY YOUR COUNTRYMEN THAN BY FOREIGNERS? Well there are fringe benefits Too numerous to even enumerate.

Sunday, January 18, 2004

Just returned from an on location shoot outside of manila. My entire back and upper arms hurts like hell. Used the steadicam and even though I got the shots to slide perfectly to a tee without a bump or a jar, it was such a fucker on the right and left forearms. Something that the manual and steadicam instructor FAILED TO INFORM ME!

They tout it as the next best thing since the crane and the jib! But they failed to mention that the weight of the cam and the harness would eventually fall on some part of the operator’s anatomy.

I should have known when I read that GARRET BROWN the inventor and the most experienced user of the STEADICAM developed some major anatomical injuries when he was using it. THAT SHOULD HAVE TIPPED ME OFF…BUT NOOOOOOOOO!

Anyway I got up at 4 in the morning and checked the equipment. Call time was at 5 AM. The utility vehicle arrived at 6:20.

Along the way we got lost three times trying to find the exit route. By the time we got to the location it was already quarter to ten.

The location was great, ABSOLUTE JUNGLE. Foliage and everything. I can do sweeping panoramic shoots without worrying about getting some television antennae or some sheet iron rooftop. Nothing! NOTHING FOR MILES!

Halfway thru the shoot my actor broke three spears. I was lucky that the production assistant decided to bring all three spears!

The heat and humidity finally got to us three hours into the shoot.

FLIM: “ Now I want you to run for your life. But I want a lot of failing hand gestures! “

DEE: “ OK!”

He runs!

FLIM: “ You run like CHARIOTS OF FIRE style. I DON’T WANT GLAMOUR! I want panic run for your life, sweat storming run.”

DEE: “ Ok! “

He runs

FLIM: “ YOU’RE SMILING! YOU’RE NOT SUPPOSE TO SMILE! You’re being chased and when they get you they’ll tear you to shreds! “

DEE: “ Ok! “

He runs again.

FLIM: “ Do it again! “

He runs again.

FLIM: “ Another take! “

HE RUNS AGAIN

DEE: “ How many times must I do this run?

FLIM: “ Until we get you running like no one has seen before.”

DEE: “ But it’s just running! “

FLIM: “ Nope! It’s running for your life! “

DEE: “ Im ready.”

FLIM: “ OK! “

I took twenty-five takes of him running across the frame. 30 takes of him battling his attackers. Fifteen takes of him falling into a ground littered with king sized carabao manure and 5 hours of non-stop shooting.

By the end of the day we smelled like newly cut grass, sweat and …a smell that I don’t even want to think about.

Last Friday I shot inside a sound studio. There was a battery of air conditions and the two sets were constructed side by side. That was such a pleasant shoot. No walking around the sun and carrying heavy equipment for thirty minutes, no sweat. Refreshments and southern style chicken just within arm’s length.

Such a far cry from today’s shoot. Now here I’m writing today’s entry while today’s shots are catalogued and written down. In an hour I will take a much-needed bath. Get a few bites in between viewing the dallies and then I’m off to editing.

There were so many interesting conversations I had with DEE the actor. But Im too exhausted to recount them today. Maybe tomorrow.
